Korea`s overseas investment jumped in 2004

Korean companies` overseas investment surged more than a third last year, propped up by manufacturers that aggressively moved to China where labor costs are lower and consumer sentiment is better, the government said yesterday.

Foreign investment surged 37 percent to reach $7.9 billion, with nearly half the figure flowing to China, said the Ministry of Finance and Economy in a statement.

This means Korea`s investment outflow to the world`s fastest-growing economy was 32 percent more compared to 2003.

"China has a huge attraction for Korean manufacturers that are looking to cut costs. The growing market there also appeals to local firms that need to cover new territories amid the weak consumer sentiment at home," said Hwang Gyu-gwang, head of the China Team at the Korea International Trade Association.

The average private-sector worker there earned about $900 during the first half of last year. The figure is considerably less than the $12,570 earned by a Korean counterpart.

China`s retail sales rose 14.5 percent from a year earlier in December. In Korea, wholesale and retail sales declined for a fifth straight month.

Drawn by such attractions, Korean manufacturing businesses were the most eager to invest in China, the Finance Ministry said.

Its statement showed that about 63 percent of the overseas investment came from the sector. Retailers and wholesalers followed with 15 percent.

In August last year, Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world`s second-largest memory-chip maker signed an agreement with the Chinese government to build two fabs in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi.

Korea`s investment in Europe also increased, standing at $710 million for 2004. It included Kia Motors Corp.`s initiatives to build plants in Germany and Slovakia. LG Electronics Inc. struck a deal with the United Kingdom to pump in $250 million.

Elsewhere, investment in North America surged 84 percent to $1.5 billion. Samsung Electronics Co. agreed to invest $130 million in Japan.
